Bridge bid backed

06 Sep, 2006 01:42 PM
PARKS Victoria has defended its decision to pull down a heritage footbridge in Hepburn Springs.

Last month's plan created keen community interest in retaining access across Doctors Gully.

The community successfully postponed the removal of the bridge located at the end of Swiss Mount Ave footbridge on August 21.

This follows the removal of another historic footbridge in Fifth St on August 18.

Parks Victoria said the future of the "unsafe" footbridges would be decided in the coming months.

Parks Victoria acting ranger in charge Karen Doyle said they were looking to the community to be part of the solution.

"Meetings with community representatives to date have demonstrated a willingness to work together with Parks Victoria to tackle the very real and difficult task of balancing priorities and funds to manage ageing and unsafe public infrastructure," she

said.

"Any alternative to remove would need to properly address public safety including engineering standards and alternative funding options."

Ms Doyle said the community had come to expect a certain level of safety for public facilities.

"So often we hear of accidents or dangerous situations where public safety has been compromised," she said.

"Parks Victoria therefore has a duty of care to the public using Hepburn Regional Park facilities."

Warning signs have now been installed.

Hepburn Springs resident Brian Hawkes said people should not use the bridges or remove the signs.

There is alternative access available near both bridges which makes replacement of the bridges a lower priority.

The footbridges are located in Fifth St and at the end of Swiss Mount Ave. They are at least 80 years old.
