POLICE have praised the behaviour of both spectators and players at last Saturday's much-hyped Central Highlands Football League match between the Hepburn and Daylesford football clubs.
Daylesford walked away victorious on Saturday, winning by 21 points in a closely fought match between the two rivals.
The game was the first time in 61 years that the two teams have played each other in the same league.
Sergeant in charge Paul Huggett from Daylesford Police said police were "very happy" with the behaviour of players and spectators before, during and after the match.
"We would like to congratulate the two committees, the players, the members, and the supporters on their excellent conduct for the game," Sgt Huggett said.
Daylesford Football Club president Wayne Evans described the game as a "fantastic match of football".
"The boys really played well and we were happy with the behaviour of everyone," Mr Evans said.
"It was definitely one of the biggest home and away crowds I've seen in a while."
Hepburn Football Club president Eddy Comelli said the match was "a great day for football".
However, he said that he did not understand the hype surrounding the match.
"What does it matter how behaved everyone was?" Mr Comelli said.
"It was just a typical game of football."
"We would also like to thank the local licensed premises for their support." Sgt Huggett also praised the area's drivers, with a booze bus set up in Main Rd, Hepburn Springs, on Saturday afternoon detecting no motorists over
the blood alcohol limit.
