WHEN Creswick North Primary School turned its heaters off last Thursday, students discovered there are other ways to beat the cold.
The students, who have been learning about energy and sustainability, were challenged to see how long they could last without heaters.
The kids came prepared with beanies, double layers, scarves and slippers.
They sipped hot Milo and snuggled in sleeping bags, while learning about the value of conserving energy.
Principal Scott Phillips said it was the second year the school had participated in "layer-up day".
"We set a date in term two when we knew it was going to test ourselves in terms of the weather," he said.
"It's reinforcing to them about behaviour.
"The easy option is to turn the heater on but sometimes the better option is to go and get a jumper."
He said it was a message the students could take home to their parents too.
The event was organised by the school's sustainability co-ordinatior Susan Doull, who was the winner of the 2009 Green Teacher of the Year Award by Sustainability Victoria.
