THE Hatwal family from the Himalayas in Northern India will officially be able to call Australia home after tonight.
Mukul, Mona and Aishwarya will be made Australian citizens at Hepburn Shire's citizenship ceremony as part of the Australia Day celebrations.
The Hatwal family migrated to Australia in 2001. They lived in Melbourne and Shepparton before discovering Daylesford.
Daylesford and surrounds reminded the family of their old home town in India.
"The climate and topography is very similar," Mr Hatwal said.
"The community is very welcoming and it is a great place to live."
Mr Hatwal is the team leader and senior town planner for the council's planning department while Mona is a volunteer for the Daylesford Regional Visitor Centre.
Aishwarya will start year 10 at Ballarat and Clarendon College.
"Hepburn Shire is well placed to not only attract but equally retain both skilled and business migrants," Mrs Hatwal said.
"This will certainly diversify Hepburn's population and thoroughly enrich our mainstream society and culture."
The Hatwal's believed Australia Day was a time to celebrate the privilege of being Australian, to recommit to the values we share and to recommit to making Australia even better for the future.
