Another safety place in region's pipeline

23 Feb, 2010 11:14 AM
DAYLESFORD could soon have a second Neighbourhood Safer Place, despite council's decision to endorse a Township Protection Plan last week with just one place of last resort.

At last Tuesday's ordinary meeting, council endorsed the CFA Township Protection Plans for Creswick, Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Trentham.

Under the plan, Daylesford has one NSP in Vincent St.

Councillor Bill McClenaghan, chair of the shire's municipal emergency management planning committee, said council had not abandoned its investigation of a second NSP at the Daylesford ARC.

"We need something indoors, where we can get out of the embers, out of the smoke," he said.

"We already have the green light from the CFA for this site."

Cr McClenaghan said council was due to complete its assessment in March.

"I believe we could very well get one," he said.

"The main street is just not enough."

The issue with the ARC site is the lack of road access.

People would have to access the last 150m on foot.

But Cr McClenaghan said with no safe NSP site available in Hepburn Springs, it was even more critical Daylesford had a second option.

Township Protection Plans, which have largely been drawn up by the CFA, were made compulsory after last February's bushfires and were part of the Royal Commission's 51 interim recommendations.

The council adopted the plans and will integrate them with its Municipal Emergency Management Plan.

The plans include information on survival during a bushfire.

A report tendered to the council said the plans would provide "pre-determined actions that will enable quick and informed decision-making by both the community and emergency services".

The CFA will now distribute the plans to relevant groups, including local fire brigades, the Department of Sustainability and Environment depots and incident control centres.

The council will provide a link to the plans on its website but they are also available on the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au
