Anniversary a reminder of the burning past

31 Jan, 2006 11:38 AM
ONE hundred years ago fires swept through Hepburn Shire destroying many prominent landmarks.

A fire started at Shepherd's Flat on January 23, 1906 and quickly swept towards Hepburn Springs destroying the shire offices, Vanzetta's Bakery, Bellinzona and then the Kidds Gully Hotel.

A wind change diverted the fire from Daylesford to Glenlyon where it burnt north towards Lyon Bank farm destroying many properties.

Across the road from Lyon Bank farm Mrs Edward O'Neill was preparing for her mother's funeral. With the fire approaching, the lidless coffin was carried outside to the potato patch where it endured the fire. The house didn't

survive.

A second fire started the same day at Leonards Hill and burnt to Korweinguboora.

During the disastrous 1939 fires Denver, Drummond and Lyonville were burnt.

On January 14, 1944, a fire swept up the Loddon river into Glenlyon, destroying many houses and a hotel. A second fire started at Yandoit and burnt towards Mt Franklin, Porcupine Ridge and on to meet the Glenlyon fire. A

wind change swept the fire towards Trentham.

Fires have twice burnt down the western side of Daylesford once in 1962 and then in February 1986.

On January 8, 1969, a fire started near Campbelltown, destroying homes and a hotel.

The fire burnt across the Jim Crow ranges towards Hepburn. A wind change took the fire to Mt Franklin then back towards Yandoit.
