Anglican parish reaches crisis point

27 Feb, 2008 09:38 AM
GLENLYON'S historic Anglican Church needs more parishioners for it to remain viable.

In an open letter in the Glenlyon & District News, church stalwart Frances Palmer said just three people attended a Sunday service at St John's on February 3.

"No church members, locally or within the Diocese, wish to close or sell any buildings in this parish but if there is no congregation there is no reason for a building," she wrote.

Ms Palmer said the Daylesford Parish was also experiencing financial problems and was "seriously in debt".

"The Parish's income is derived from the interest from a few bequests and the weekly collection," she wrote.

"Currently we cannot afford to pay a full-time ordained priest (and) we are blessed that the Reverend Ray Saggers is working as our locum priest in addition to his full-time position as chaplain to the state schools in the Kyneton district."

Parish church warden John Clark said selling one of the parish's churches - in Hepburn or Glenlyon - had been seriously considered in the past but had been "knocked on the head".

"It would be a pity to sell a church but at the moment that is not going to happen," he said.

"We should be about opening churches not closing them."

Mr Clark said the parish did not have a title for the church and to gain one for sale would take between two and five years.

It was believed the church was on crown land and it was not known if any proceeds from the sale would go to the Parish, he said.

"The gist of Frances' article is that the congregation is very low and we need to increase numbers there," Mr Clark said.

"We want to make the public in Glenlyon aware that we are here."

St John's was temporarily closed in 1974 and advertised for auction, however, a title was not found and the sale was cancelled.
