THE quest to find a new home for Ballarat's saleyards inched closer to completion yesterday with the list of possible sites reduced to four.
The Saleyards Relocation Committee will begin discussing the shortlist with relevant authorities next week.
Two of the sites remain at Miners Rest after three were removed from the previous list of six.
They are where the Sunraysia Hwy meets the Western Hwy and Miners Rest Rd.
A previously unmentioned site at the corner of the Western Hwy and Remembrance Dve in Burrumbeet was also included.
The fourth site is at the corner of Western Hwy and Ormond Rd, Wallace.
Groups including VicRoads, Central Highlands Water and the Environment Protection Authority will be consulted during the selection process.
Relocation Committee chairman Adrian Doyle warned a final decision could be a long way off.
He said after the controversial proposed site at Learmonth was blocked, the committee was not prepared to take any chances.
"Everyone wants it to happen tomorrow and so do we, but we want to get this 100 per cent right and if it takes an extra month then so be it," he said.
"We started with 16 sites, we got it down to six, now we're down to four. Give us another month or two and then we'll get it to one."
Mr Doyle said he did not expect problems with landowners of the proposed sites.
"We've spoken to those parties and they've all said `if that's what the community wants, we'll be happy to sit down and talk to you', " he said.
Victoria Farmers Federation representative on the Saleyards Advisory Committee and the Relocation Committee Paul Beechey said the Pyrenees Council was considering proposing alternative sites.
"If all the sites in Ballarat fell over for some reason and they put their hand up and said `we've got site x' then why shouldn't we consider it?" he said.
