$30 million loss to region

20 Jun, 2006 11:16 AM
THE loss of $30 million from the district's economy through the closure of Hepburn Spa should not be treated lightly, according to the newly developed Hepburn Spa Community Advisory Committee.

Speaking for the first time since its inception, HSCAC said that the Hepburn Spa generated about $30 million annually for the region.

Committee chairwoman Jenny Beacham said the committee was concerned about the consequences of the loss to the tourism industry in Daylesford and Hepburn Springs when the Hepburn Spa closed for up to 14 months during

the redevelopment phase.

Ms Beacham said that when Hepburn Shire Council undertook the process of redevelopment four years ago, the undertaking given to the community was that there would be minimal disruption with a three-week closure during

the redevelopment.

She said several people in the new group purchased businesses and took on leases with that understanding.

"Suddenly and unexpectedly, when the resumption of the redevelopment was announced, the decision to close down for 12 to 14 months was announced.

"There was no consultation before this announcement and the consequences to local businesses and the 85 employees who will lose their jobs in October are major," she said.

The advisory committee will meet with the council, local politicians, the State Government Major Projects Group and the community to discuss their concerns and look for alternatives to total closure, such as the staged

development option first proposed by the council.

Ms Beacham said HSCAC would seek answers to a number of questions including: how do you weigh up the loss of $30 million against the additional estimated cost of $500,000 for a staged process; and what happens to the 85 employees

who are without a job in October.

"Some people say the fiasco of Seal Rocks at Phillip Island was because no-one was left taking an interest - no employees, no lessee, no customers - because the business was closed down and disappeared from public view. Is that

what we want to happen to our major tourist icon?" Ms Beacham said.
